It took a long while before I got into Welcome to Nightvale. The podcast has become extremely popular, but I guess absurdist supernatural comedy isn’t exactly my thing.
Regardless, the writers behind Nightvale, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, have been doing a writerly podcast Start With This. It’s down-to-earth and sensible in exactly the way that Welcome to Nightvale isn’t.
From the first episode Idea to Execution, Fink and Cranor outline their take on the creative process with practical “get ‘er done” tips. It’s slightly oriented to writing for podcasts, but there’s plenty of useful stuff for beginning writers of any type. Each episode even ends with a little exercise, Writing Excuses-style.
